![]() ![]() A semi-closed deck design provides the same cooling efficiency as an open-deck cylinder block but with the greater strength of a full closed-deck block. Like the other Subaru 2.5-litre intercooled/turbocharged engines, the Legacy/Outback turbo is based on a specially reinforced semi-closed deck engine block with forged aluminum alloy pistons and forged high-carbon steel connecting rods. The new turbocharged boxer shares architecture and technology with the engine used in the Impreza WRX STi and Forester 2.5 XT, but the cylinder block, cylinder heads, crankshaft, camshafts, intake system, turbo and intercooler, among other elements, are all unique to this engine. The new turbocharged 2.5-litre DOHC boxer engine produces 250 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. The new engine is fitted exclusively in 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT and Outback 2.5 XT models, where it can be teamed with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a new 5-speed automatic transmission.
